How is the state of our press freedom in Malaysia?

It seems that the government is conveniently falling back on the pandemic to get out of anything that could threaten their position (such as democracy!).
They sure don’t make them like they used to.
The government came out with categories defining fake news during the Covid19 pandemic. Are they trying to curb fake news or just trying to shut everyone up?
Fix laws that loom over journalism and the media before even talking about a media council.
