They want to take it away from us!! Bloody bastards!!
Give us back our Internet!

OCT 8 — I’ve always been very vocal in my belief that the Internet is an important tool that empowers ordinary people and allows them to have a voice. No barriers of entry mean that anyone can have their own media outlet and even take on the big guns (as long as the content is of quality!). It also means that information and knowledge become a basic human right as everything is free for anyone to access.
I wrote articles about it, gave lectures, encouraged the youth to use it, trained other journalists to use it, and I used it myself for my own work. I believed in it so much that I even consulted for companies and got them to utilise it, too, as a free PR tool. Only a few years has gone by and now it looks like the winds of change are blowing and I don’t know if it’s for the better or worse. [Click to read the rest of the article]
Since the dawn of time, gatekeepers have built seemingly insurmountable barriers to elevate the elite and to put them on a platform above the middle and lower class. And the majority have always figured out a way to push through them.
I have been on both sides of this issue – I used to be a reporter employed at a weekly newspaper, until the industry crashed and hundreds of people, including myself, were laid off two years ago. I have also been stymied by pay walls on newspaper websites and plan on purchasing an iPhone in the near future. Traditional and new media are evolving but no matter the frontiers we conquer or the technology that’s invented, business will always be faced with building a better mouse trap and protecting their viability, profit and sources of revenue.
The World Wide Web, as much as I would like it to be a monument to democracy and social good, will not escape the grasp of Big Business. We the public will just have to rally and keep pushing past those gates :).
