OCT 14 — “The azan sounds horrible!” I screamed as I dragged myself out of bed.
“Don’t say that. That’s not nice,” said my bunkmate.
“But it’s true. How do they expect people to get up that way?”
“Just get up!”
That was the common banter I would have most mornings at 6 with my bunkmate in boarding school many (many!) years ago. I used to cringe every morning when I heard the call to prayer, usually done by another sleepy and groggy student. Bro….during Friday prayer sermon (khutbah) one cannot utter any words to each other if you do so all your Friday prayer’s “pahala” will be gone i.e no “pahala” at all, “hai orang2 yang beriman hendak lah kamu diam semasa khatib berkhutbah janganlah kamu berkata2 jika kamu berkata2 hapuslah pahala Jumaat kamu”……..this is usually said out by the “bilal” prior to the “khutbah” to remind all worshipers, as comparing Mawi to the muazzin in Syria you are probably right because Mawi really cannot sing………
